“Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.”
Dolores Huerta, Latina civil rights activist

Somos Latinas: Voices of Wisconsin Latina Activists, shares the stories of 25 women with Wisconsin ties who have lived the words of celebrated civil rights activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, Dolores Huerta.

In Somos Latinas, authors Andrea-Teresa Arenas and Eloisa Gómez share powerful narratives, drawn from the activist interviews they helped conduct as part of the Somos Latinas Digital History Project, housed at the Wisconsin Historical Society. From outspoken demonstrators to collaborative community-builders to determined individuals working for change behind the scenes, Somos Latinas details the inspirational lives and their array of community-building actions. The book also includes the authors' analysis and in-depth exploration of key themes like motivations, role models, and risk-taking.

Please join Dr. Arenas and Ms. Gomez along with interviewees from Somos Latinas to discuss the past, present, and future of Latina activism and efforts to make Wisconsin a more equitable space for all who call it home.

Andrea-Teresa Arenas, PhD, is a retired UW–Madison Chican@ and Latin@ Studies Faculty Affiliate and former director of the Office of Service Learning and Community-Based Research in the College of Letters & Science. Eloisa Gómez, M.S., is the former director of the Milwaukee County UW–Extension Office.

This event is sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, the History Department, Latin American and Latinx Studies, and the Center for Urban Research, Teaching, and Outreach.
