Theotokos Lecture
Start Date: 9/26/2017Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 9/26/2017End Time: 5:30 PM

Event Description:
The Department of Theology will host the annual Theotokos Lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m. in Raynor Memorial Libraries’ Suite BC. A pre-lecture reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the lobby.

Rev. Dorian Llywelyn, S.J., executive director for the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education at Santa Clara University, will present the lecture.

The lecture will discuss how theologians in the global North have, over the last thirty years, frequently presented Mary in ethical mode, as inspiration for and emblem of justice. At the same time, a grassroots devotional piety that sees the Virgin as the active, maternal embodiment of mercy continues to flourish. These contrasting universes ask important questions about the relationship between prayer, religious experience, and academic theology.

For questions or more information contact Dr. Mark Johnson, associate professor of theology, at (414) 288-7646.
