Debates about the relationship between slavery and capitalism have received renewed interest on the 400 year anniversary of slavery in America, with increased popularity of reparations, and a growing scholarly interest in the history of capitalism. In this talk I will unpack these debates and assess the theoretical claims and historical evidence that may be brought to bear on them. I argue
that antebellum slavery was itself capitalist, but that its main contribution to American capitalist development came not via the wealth it created for slave owners, nor the stimulus it gave to Northern industry, but rather through shaping the American state and creating a persistent culture of racism.
